Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome of unknown cause that can affect the whole body; it presents as severe fatigue and whole-body aches with some extremely tender areas. Other symptoms may include anxiety and depression, sleep disturbance, irritable bowel syndrome, inability to concentrate and a generalized sense of feeling unwell. Five million adults in the U.S. -- more often women than men -- suffer from fibromyalgia.
Since the cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, it has proven difficult to treat. However, acupuncture can complement traditional western treatment by reducing pain and stiffness. Dr. Tareen uses Japanese and French ear acupuncture protocols to improve symptoms.

Headaches and Migraines
Millions of Americans suffer headaches. Some of the more common causes are tension, sinuses, and migraine. Tension headaches can occur several times a day and last about 30 to 90 minutes; they are described as feeling like a band around the head, with episodes of throbbing. Sinus headaches are usually around the cheek bones or forehead with sinus symptoms. Migraines are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. Studies clearly show that acupuncture is helpful in both treatment of prevention of these and other types of headaches. Dr. Tareen uses both whole body Japanese acupuncture and French ear acupuncture to relieve and prevent headaches.

Lymphedema
Lymphedema is the swelling of different regions of the body. It is a pathological or disease state in which the lymphatic vessels are missing or impaired (classified as 'primary'), or when lymph vessels are damaged or lymph nodes removed ('secondary'). 'Secondary lymphedema,' or acquired lymphedema, can develop as a result of surgery, radiation, infection or trauma.
The recommended treatment plan is determined using the "Complex Decongestive Therapy" (CDT) approach. This process includes manual lympathic drainage, bandaging, proper skin care & diet, compression enhancers, and remedial exercises. Certain conditions are contraindications for Lymphedema massage. Patients suffering congestive heart failure, renal failure, active cancers or infections my need clearance from their primary care physician before beginning treatment.

Neuropathic Pain
Neuropathic pain is a chronic pain condition usually seen after tissue and nerve injury. The injured nerves send intermittent signals to the pain centers of the brain, triggering a burning or shooting pain, which may be accompanied by a feeling of tingling or numbness. Causes of neuropathic pain include back, leg, and hip problems, chemotherapy, diabetes, HIV infection or AIDS, shingles, spine surgery, alcoholism and amputation.
Acupuncture is shown to significantly treat neuropathic pain. At Advanced Physician Acupuncture, Dr. Tareen uses an integrative approach -- combining Japanese, French and German acupuncture protocols to reduce pain.

Tinnitus
The severity of tinnitus -- also known as "ringing in the ears" -- varies widely, and sufferers of the condition have described it in many ways: ringing, "like cicadas or crickets", the sound of wind, dripping water, and grinding steel. Significant Tinnitus can cause insomnia and anxiety and difficulty in concentration.
Tinnitus has many causes. It is often a side effect of a medication, due to prolonged exposure to loud sounds that causes damage to the auditory nerve, or the result of an ear or brain infection, trauma, TMJ, arthritis, or impacted ear wax.
Before treatment begins, the cause needs to be investigated by an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor so a proper diagnosis can be made. Once a patient is diagnosed, Dr. Tareen uses French Auricular Acupuncture. The treatment only requires two or three sessions.
